CHARLES SURRANO: It was of immeasurable benefit to me having worked for insurance companies and learning many of the corporate type secrets. It gave me immense perspective on the insurance industry and how it works and I bring that to bear in every case on the opposite side.  Sometimes you have to decide who the claim is against. Is it the insurance agent for failing in his standard of care as a professional, or is it the insurance company for not honoring its contractual obligation to pay?  If you find that the policy that you have doesn't cover the situation you're in, you may want to question whether or not the insurance agent put you with the right policy with the right limits.  If on the other hand it looks as though the contract provides for coverage but for whatever reason the insurance company isn't paying, that points the finger in the direction of the insurance company on issues of coverage and bad faith versus as regards the agent, errors and omissions. Most people don't understand insurance or insurance coverages. That's why when you go to an insurance agent he's supposed to take measures to make sure that you're adequately protected. Too often people make the mistake of thinking it was my fault, I didn't tell him what I wanted. But the point is it was his job to find out.
